Wolsingham, ancient market town who’s origins go back to Saxon times, is 23 miles south south west of Newcastle and 15 Miles west of Durham and stands on the north side of the river Wear at the confluence with Waskerley beck.

Because of a disastrous fire which engulfed the town in the late 1600 ‘s there are very few houses remaining older than the beginning of the eighteenth century. However, the plan of the town still follows the medieval layout, with many narrow streets and lanes to explore. The houses on Front Street retain the long narrow gardens characteristic of medieval times.

In medieval times Wolsingham was a holy place; being the home to the hermit Aelric and the pirate saint; Saint Godric, who founded Finchale Priory. The town is also recorded as the site of a miracle, where a young girl was killed in an accident involving a horse and her life was restored. But today the town’s Holy Wood is the site of an executive housing estate.
